This is a four-part workshop package that combines our four most popular workshops into an integrated "crash course" in management skills for scientists.

This workshop series consists of the four modules described in the “Management Skills for Scientists” (Workshop 12) series but in which each module had been customized to reflect circumstances and situations that are specific to project-driven private sector organizations. The customizations are reflected in industry specific workshop themes, as well as case studies, exercises and tools designed to reflect these themes.

Examples include:

  • Leading without authority: How program managers use negotiation.

  • Tools for managing your team in a matrixed organization.

  • Running productive program and project meetings.

  • How to help new hires transition from an academic mind set.

This sequence is ideal for organizations seeking to bring their scientists "up to speed" in the core skills associated with successful interactions, collaborations and team membership and management in an industry, biotech or pharmaceutical setting. The workshop days can be done in succession or separated by weeks or months.

Session 1: Difficult Conversations in the Research Workplace: Fundamentals of Negotiation ( Workshop 1).

Session 2: Leading Scientific Team and Project Meetings (Workshop 2).

Session 3: Hiring and Retaining Your Science Team (Workshop 3).

Session 4: Managing Your Science Team: Setting Goals, Giving Feedback and Managing in a Matrix (Workshop 4, industry version).

This workshop sequence provides a comprehensive introduction to the essential tools needed to manage a project-centric research group or a scientific project team. The workshops has been customized to reflect a pharma, biotech or private sector environment. This four part series can be offered on consecutive days or with a gap of days or weeks in between.
